Small business owners are the heart of the Okanagan economy and at Valley First, we love working with them. Our business members Tyler De Smet and Kary Tainaka had both been working in auto dealerships for 20 years when they decided they could offer better value and a more reliable customer experience in the underserved West Kelowna marketplace. So in March, they opened Certified Automotive specializing in car maintenance for domestic, Asian and European import automobiles. “Our goal is to troubleshoot small problems before they become big expensive ones,” says Tyler.

Not only did working with an experienced Valley First business banking advisor in Christina Parker help them select the best day to day banking options but she also helped them with something they didn’t expect.

“Initially we looked at opening our business accounts with Valley First because of the low fees but Christina has also helped us create a solid business plan for the future, so now we have a direction to go in,” says Kary.

Their advice to others looking to start their own businesses? “Anticipate a much longer start-up period,” says Kary. “Getting the various permits and licenses requirements—and all the inevitable delays—took two months longer than expected.”
