Valley First to help Penticton residents combat identity theft

April 10, 2017

Penticton, B.C. — Valley First, a division of First West Credit Union takes a stand against identity theft at Shred It and Forget It!, an event to educate consumers on ways to protect themselves from becoming victim to fraud. In collaboration with the Downtown Penticton Association, members of the public are invited to bring their personal documents for secure, on-site shredding on Saturday, Apr. 22 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at Penticton’s Backstreet Boulevard (beside Guerard’s Fine Furniture, 70 Backstreet Blvd).

“Identity theft is an all-too-common type of financial fraud,” says Kate Pederson, member services advisor with Valley First’s Penticton Main branch. “Fraudsters can use your information to apply for loans, credit cards and even mortgages in your name, which is why shredding personal documents is an absolute must. We at Valley First care about protecting our members and the community from these types of attacks, and we’re looking forward to sharing protection tips with event attendees.”

Shred It and Forget It! will feature complementary shredding services from Okanagan Paper Shredding Inc. with a cash or non-perishable food donation to support the Penticton Salvation Army Food Bank and Feed the Valley. As the credit union’s signature cause, Feed the Valley—which tackles hunger by raising food, funds and awareness in the Okanagan, Similkameen and Thompson valleys—eclipsed $1 million raised since 2010 in April 2016.

Penticton Mayor Andrew Jakubeit will also be in attendance at this year’s event. “Fraud awareness and prevention is certainly a problem facing all communities,” says Jakubeit. “We are very happy to have Valley First provide this opportunity for our residents to safely dispose of confidential documents and help out the food bank at the same time.”

Attendees can also enjoy complementary coffee provided by Starbucks, and can be entered to win a personal shredder, courtesy of Valley First.

“We’re thrilled to once again work with Valley First to bring this important event to the Penticton community,” says Lynn Allin, executive director of the Downtown Penticton Association. “In addition to raising awareness around identity theft, Shred It and Forget It! brings together residents and businesses to create positive connections within the Penticton community, which is what the Downtown Penticton Association is all about.”
