Feed the Valley Receives $10,000 Community Empowerment Grant
May 30, 2013

Penticton, B.C.—Valley First’s Feed the Valley program not only continues to support local food banks, it has also been recognized by Concentra Financial as one of Canada’s top credit union-driven community investment initiatives.

During May, Valley First was named as a recipient of a $10,000 donation through Concentra’s emPOWERING Your Communities campaign. Feed the Valley was recognized for its embodiment of co-operative values and demonstrating credit union leadership within the community.

“The quality of projects our credit union partners are leading across Canada is humbling and inspirational,” says Mary Beckett, executive vice-president of Concentra Financial. “Feed the Valley is an incredible program that touches the lives of many people throughout a large area. Valley First can be very proud of this initiative and the difference it is making in the community.”

Established by Valley First in 2010, Feed the Valley aims to raise food, funds and awareness for food banks throughout the Okanagan, Similkameen and Thompson regions. Since its launch, Feed the Valley has generated more than $480,000 and close to 45,000 pounds in food donations. This sets Valley First well on the way to achieving its ambitious goal of raising $1 million by 2020.

“The way our employees, members and community partners have embraced this terrific hunger-fighting initiative has blown us all away,” says Valley First’s Christa Phillips. “To be recognized as one of the leading credit-union programs in Canada is simply tremendous.

“With the continued support of our partners and corporate donations further strengthening Feed the Valley, we will be able to help even more people in our communities.”

Community members can support the Feed the Valley program by donating non-perishable food items or making cash donations at their nearest Valley First branch. All donations of more than $20 are tax-deductible. Donations can be made as one-time contributions, through regular, pre-authorized payments or online through Feed the Valley or through the Food Banks B.C. online donations portal.
