Students Recognized for Community Involvement

Eight students to share $16,000 in Valley First Education Awards

August 11, 2015

Penticton, B.C.—Eight students from the Thompson-Okanagan region have received a major boost to their education funds after receiving Valley First Education Awards. The recipients were selected for demonstrating outstanding school and community involvement and will each receive $2,000 to help further their education.

This year’s recipients are: Ashley Curtis (Pinantan Lake), Josef Perszon (Kamloops), Kaylee Lesmeister (Oliver), Kyle Jansen (Vernon), Madeline Willson (Penticton), Riley Whittaker and Tiana Monaghan (Kelowna), Stephanie Turner (West Kelowna).

“We’ve been handing out education awards for 14 years and every year it is an honour to give back to some outstanding young members of our community,” says Susan Byrom, senior manager of community investment at First West Credit Union. “This is just one way we can recognize their contribution and encourage other young people to get involved. Congratulations to all of the recipients and best of luck as you continue your education and continue to make a difference in your local community.”

Over the last 14 years, First West Credit Union’s Valley First Division has awarded approximately $300,000 in awards and scholarships in the Thompson-Okanagan Region. The awards are presented annually to qualifying secondary and post-secondary students who are members of First West Credit Union.
