Workers could be under-insured for travel-related work duties

April 21, 2016

Penticton, B.C.—If you are among the large number of Canadians who regularly travels for work, you may unknowingly have a gap in your vehicle insurance coverage. Generally thought of as a personal insurance, vehicle insurance may be impacted by how often you hit the road as part of your job.

“It’s a common misconception that if you’re insured for commuting to and from work, you must be covered for all work-related road travel,” says Linda Kenzle, insurance services manager at Valley First Insurance, a division of First West Insurance Services, Ltd. “However, if you make more than six work-related trips per calendar month beyond your normal commute, you may need additional coverage under a specific business rate class on your policy.”

If you’re unsure whether you require additional coverage, Kenzle recommends confirming your coverage with your insurance provider.

“If an employee is required to attend meetings or work-related events at locations outside his or her typical place of work, specific vehicle insurance may be required,” she says. “There are different rate classes for vehicle insurance policies and it’s important that a vehicle not be used outside the scope of the policy. Doing so creates a risk of not being insured in the event of a claim.”

The general rule of thumb is, if you use your vehicle for work-related purposes above and beyond your daily commute, you should look into additional coverage, says Kenzle.
