CANsave financial literacy program wins $10,000 award

May 29, 2017

Penticton, B.C. — CANsave, an innovative financial literacy program for elementary school children, developed and delivered in partnership with Valley First, a division of First West Credit Union, and Enactus Okanagan College, recently netted a $10,000 award from Concentra.

“Valley First couldn't be more proud of our partners at Enactus Okanagan College and the overwhelming success of the CANsave program,” say Valley First president Susan Ewanick. “Together we’re making a real difference in instilling sound financial behaviors in students that will last a lifetime.”

Since its inception last fall, CANsave has been delivered to 2,500 students in grades one through four in more than 100 schools across the Okanagan valley. Based on the premise that kids can be financially savvy too, the program teaches children money management skills with an emphasis on wants, needs and supporting charitable causes. The program was created by Enactus students, and sponsored and delivered in classrooms by Valley First financial experts.

Valley First’s original commitment to the CANsave program was $25,000 but the response to the program from schools was so overwhelming and Valley First followed up its investment with an additional $25,000, which includes funding to allow students to donate to a charity of their choice.

CANSave was one of 15 credit unions to receive a $10,000 Empowering Your Community award from Concentra, which invests in community projects across the country supported by local credit unions.

“Partnerships with programs like CANsave helps us to strengthen the communities we serve and make a meaningful difference in the lives of our members” says Ewanick. “The generous award from Concentra will ensure that we can continue to serve the needs of our youngest community members in our through this program.”
