Valley First

Community Crew

Aligned with First West Credit Union’s social vision, Lead Well, Valley First supports the development of young leaders in our communities. With this in mind, in 2017, Valley First launched a pilot youth ambassador program called the Community Crew, with the aim of providing leadership opportunities for students in our communities while supporting our non-profit partners through both an internship and family friendly activities at events. Following a successful inaugural year, the Crew expanded the program in 2019 to support more locations and connect with a greater number of families throughout our region.

Made up of both high school and post-secondary students, the four crew members and team lead interned for a total of over 200 hours this summer supporting The Central Okanagan Food Bank and The Metis Community Services Society. In addition, the Crew attended more than 40 community events this summer, providing fun free activities such as face painting, button making, piggy bank crafts, giant Jenga, and mini hockey. They travelled from Kamloops to Oliver, at events like Parks Alive, the Penticton Peach Festival, Amstrong IPE, Oliver Sunshine Festival, BC Days and many more.

The Valley First Community Crew is now looking for events to attend in 2020. If you are interested in having the Valley First Community Crew Team bring some family friendly cheer to your upcoming event or initiative or consider interning at your non-profit organization or, please complete this application.

Community partners

Central Okanagan Food Bank
The Central Okanagan Food bank is dedicated to providing much needed food and support to those living in Kelowna and West Kelowna. Many families struggle to make ends meet, so the food bank helps families in need by serving between 2,500-3,500 individuals per month.

Start Fresh Project
Start Fresh started out as a non-profit organization that facilitates culinary and farm education programming to inspire people about food; teaching employment and life skills, while creating access to meaningful employment. The Start Fresh Kitchen, was then launched which is a social enterprise and collaborative kitchen space that hosts boutique cooking classes and caters events. Start Fresh believes that the entire community benefits when its most vulnerable members are empowered to lead better lives. Their mission is to contribute towards social equity in our community through inspiring people about local food, and by increasing access to educational and employment opportunities.
