Valley First

Community Crew

2017 Pilot Year

Aligned with the First West Credit Union social vision, Lead Well, here at Valley First we believe in the importance of developing advanced leadership opportunities for youth in our local communities. This summer, Valley First developed and launched a pilot Youth Ambassador program called the Community Crew. The Crew consisted of a college-aged team lead and four high school students who represented Valley First by partaking in an internship with a non-profit partner two days a week, while also providing complimentary family-friendly activities at a number of community events throughout the summer. The goal of this program was to further the students experience with non-profit organizations, while giving back to the community. In 2017, the Crew directly supported two local non-profit organizations during their internships; Karis Support Society, and Central Okanagan Food Bank, while participating in events hosted by many other non-profit organizations, such as Central Okanagan Hospice Association, Festivals Kelowna, and Creative Okanagan.

In 2017, not only did the Crew assist Valley First in making a meaningful difference in our local communities, they also developed important leadership skills and acted as role models for youth. By enhancing community events with fun activities such as face painting, giant Jenga and various family-friendly games, the crew ensured that everyone who visited our tent had a memorable experience. The Crew contributed a total of 264 hours benefiting the specific non-profit organization they partnered with, and attended over 40 community events located in the Central Okanagan from Peachland to Vernon. Some of the local events the Crew attended included the Downtown Kelowna Block Party, Parks Alive, West Kelowna Music in the Park, and Canada 150 Festivals, just to name a few.

The Valley First Community Crew is eager to start looking for events to attend in summer of 2018. They will operate during the months of July and August to provide in-kind services to non-profit organizations. If you are interested in having the Valley First Community Crew Team assist your organization with an upcoming event or initiative in support of our community, please complete an application.
