Communities First

We’re proud to support Communities First, a new partnership with the BC Hockey League (BCHL). Excelling at team sport and community engagement, the BCHL provides over 350 youth the opportunity to play Junior A hockey and volunteer in our communities. Communities First was designed by the BCHL to recognize youth leadership, while encouraging fans and players to participate in building stronger communities through volunteerism with local organizations.

Communities First showcases the community involvement of the BCHL’s 17 local teams across British Columbia. The program brings players, families and friends together to provide support for important local causes and initiatives. The flagship program of Communities First is our sponsorship of the BCHL's Five Hole for Food Challenge. A national, volunteer-driven, non-profit initiative with a bold, enterprising and entrepreneurial approach, Five Hole for Food aims to raise food and awareness for Canadians across the country. They are out to prove that a generation hungry for change, an engaged corporate community, and a national pastime is the perfect formula for changing the face of fundraising.

Since 2011 BCHL Penticton Vees and Valley First have worked together to raise food and funds for Feed the Valley at sponsored game nights at the South Okanagan Events Centre. Donations of 14,950 pounds of non-perishable food collected at game nights have helped restock The Penticton Salvation Army Food Bank’s shelves depleted during the holiday season. In 2016, the addition of a raffle to win a luxury Vees suite including 12 tickets and a $200 catering voucher has resulted in over $2,000 raised also benefiting the food bank.

Raising food, funds and awareness for food banks across the Thompson, Okanagan, Similkameen regions it serves is the focus of Feed the Valley. Join your community BCHL team and help support your local food bank.
