ACCEPTABLE IDENTIFICATION

 


To open your new membership, we'll ask you for one piece of valid government-issued ID.

 

ACCEPTED GOVERNMENT-ISSUED PHOTO ID

The following are acceptable government-issued identification types:

Important: Identification must be authentic, valid, and current.

  • Driver’s Licence: Issued in Canada, as permitted to be used for identification purposes under provincial law.
  • Passport: Canadian or foreign
  • BC Services Card
  • Citizenship Card issued before February 2012
  • Secure Certificate of Indian Status (with photo)
  • Certificate of Indian Status issued by the Government of Canada
  • Global Entry Card
  • International Driver’s Licence with photo
  • NEXUS card
  • Permanent Resident Card
  • Provincial ID Card
    Example: BC Services Card with photograph, BC Identification Card with photograph and expiry date.


DUAL PROCESS IDENTITY VERIFICATION

If you don't have any acceptable government-issued identification, we will ask you to provide information that is valid and current and from two different reliable sources to confirm any two of the following:

  • Your name and address
  • Your name and date of birth
  • Your name and confirmation of an existing deposit account with a financial entity

 

For identity verification purposes, a reliable source of information is an originator or issuer of information that is considered trustworthy, well known, and reputable (subject to internal approval).
The following are examples of reliable sources of information:

  • Bank statement for deposit or chequing accounts
  • BC Services Card (without photo)
  • Benefits statement (Federal, Provincial, Municipal)
  • Birth Certificate
  • Canada Pension Plan (CPP) statement
  • Canadian Public Utility Bill
  • Citizenship Certificate (without photo)
  • Credit Card statement
  • Driver’s Licence without photo (including temporary licence)
  • CRA Income Tax Assessment
  • Property Tax Assessment
  • Provincial Health Card, if provincial or territorial law permits use for identification purposes.
  • Student ID Card
  • Travel Visa

 

MINOR IDENTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Under 12 YEARS OF AGE

If the minor is under the age of 12 years, their identity is verified by Government-issued photo identification (identifying the minor) or the minor’s parent/guardian must provide the following:

  • The minor’s details, including the minor’s name, date of birth and Social Insurance Number (if available).
  • The parent or legal guardian’s government-issued photo identification to confirm their own identity (showing a common address with the minor).

 


 

12 to 15 YEARS OF AGE

If the minor is 12-15 years old, their identity is verified by Government-issued photo identification (identifying the minor) or they must provide the following:

  • A valid piece of government-issued photo ID that includes the name and address of the minor’s parent/guardian.
  • One piece of information from a reliable source that includes the minor’s name and date of birth. For example, the minor’s birth certificate.
